The owner of this vehicle, in search of a hi fidelity sound system and let down by the lack of effort put forth by others, made a reservation with us for an audio consultation. Just like every other time we do a consultation, I sat down with him and had a brief conversation about his past car audio experiences, what he likes about his existing system and what he would like to see improved. I grabbed him a bottle of water and gave him a tour of the facility because we feel that our clients experiences here are about so much more than just boxes with things in them! Once he had a good understanding of how we would take care of his vehicle and knew that he had found the right place, we had a listen to our demo vehicle. Well, it wasn’t long after that that we were putting together an awesome sound system for his own car!
This whole system revolves around two main design elements; retaining the factory radio’s functionality and obtaining a noise free, crystal clear sound reproduction. To integrate with the factory radio, we employed a Bit One from Audison to accept the audio signal from the radio, process it to perfection and send it out to the 2 Audison AV Quattro 4 channel amplifiers. The amplifiers were utilized to power an Audison Voce 3-way component set up front which were ran fully active, giving us complete control over their output and tonality, while the remaining 2 channels will be used for the forthcoming subwoofers in the rear panels. The Bit One and the two amplifiers were mounted to a custom welded steel rack that bolts into the trunk, the 6.5″ midbass speakers were mounted in the factory locations in the doors while the 3″ midrange and 1″ tweeter were mounted in custom made kick panel speaker pods to minimize differences in the distance between the left and right side speakers, improving staging.
Possibly the coolest aspect of this installation and how we were able to achieve noise free, crystal clear sound, is the use of Audison’s Full D/A system design. This basically means that the music changes from a digital signal to an analog signal only once, rather than the 3-5 times you’d usually find in a basic audio system, keeping the signal integrity and reducing the chance for noise to near zero. To do this, we used the I-20 from Pure to give us a Digital Optical output from an ipod which was then fed into the optical input of the Bit One. The Bit One then sends the digital signal to the two amplifiers via it’s built-in AD/AC link capabilities. Finally, the amplifier converts the signal to analog and sends it on out to the speakers. Pretty cool right? What’s even cooler than that is that we found a way to make the I-20 much more discrete and compact than it comes stock. This way, it could be hidden away and you see only a cable coming out of the center console. Enjoy the pics and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
