A client from Chandler, Arizona, came to Handcrafted Car Audio in search of BMW X3 technology updates for his 2008 model. Since the SUV was almost a decade old, he wanted to modernize its features to make it safer to drive with navigation and smartphone integration solutions. We searched high and low for a cost-effective installation solution that would let us replace the factory source unit. After exhausting our alternatives, we came up with a unique plan to meet his goals: using standalone equipment from Garmin and Dension and a way to make it look like it belongs. The client quickly approved our proposal, and we scheduled an appointment to start the work.
Garmin Navigation
We chose a Garmin DriveSmart 70LMT 7-inch navigation system for the truck. Garmin is well-known for its intuitive and easy-to-use interface. The 70LMT includes detailed mapping of North America along with free lifetime map updates and free lifetime traffic information. The 70LMT also offers voice recognition, making it even easier and safer to use.
To make the system look like it belonged in the vehicle and wasn’t just “stuck in place,” we created a mounting shroud for the 70LMT on top of the dash. Using ABS plastic sheets, we curved the back and sides of the pod to follow the design elements of the X3. With a few coats of matching black paint, the new pod looked like it came from the factory. This location puts the navigation system well within reach of the driver.
Garmin Backup Camera
We added a Garmin BC30 wireless backup camera system to the 70LMT. We mounted the camera above the license plate to provide a clear view of everything behind the vehicle. The 70LMT allows him to switch between the camera and navigation display easily. The wireless functionality of the camera saved us time on completing the installation.
Garmin Bluetooth and Dension Audio Gateway
The 70LMT includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming functionality. The client can dial a number directly from the screen of the 70LMT, or choose an existing contact from the phone book or previously made calls. To ensure that the client can hear incoming calls and Bluetooth music streaming clearly, we used a Dension Audio Gateway to feed audio to the factory source unit.
When the client returned to Handcrafted Car Audio, we walked him through how to use navigation system. We paired his phone and demonstrated the hands-free calling and audio streaming functionality of the system. Finally, we showed him how to use the backup camera. He was thrilled with how everything looked, and how easy it was to use.
