Continuing Education: K40 Laser and Radar Defense Systems Class

Recently, several members of the Handcrafted team attended a laser and radar defense workshop held by K40 Electronics at the world-famous Kingpin University of Kingpin Car and Marine Audio in Wilsonville, Oregon. Here are a few of the topics we covered during the training experience.

Installation Techniques

The Kingpin and K40 team put together an amazing presentation. The materials covered some of the latest techniques in installing and configuring the RL360i and Rl200i radar detection systems and the Laser Defuser g5 and Optix transponders. We covered component mounting, transponder aiming, wiring tips and tricks, and the pros and cons of different components during the course. We were able to share unique and creative installation solutions for the system’s visual alert indicators. The training staff presented a unique and new installation technique that reduces the invasiveness of each installation, helping to keep each vehicle in like-new condition.

System Estimating

One challenge for everyone who sells and installs radar and laser defense systems is to provide clients with accurate estimates of the cost of each project. This challenge is more complicated on a vehicle we have not worked on before. We do not want to guess. If we underestimate the complexity of the vehicle, we cannot be profitable. If we over-estimate, it costs you – our valued customer – more than it should. We covered several techniques and procedures to provide accurate estimates for a variety of different vehicles to ensure everyone is happy with the outcome.

Hands-on Experience

The training staff provided several vehicles with installed full radar and laser defense systems to help us better understand the functionality of each system component and how they work together. We got to drive these vehicles while the training staff pointed laser and radar guns at them and took readings. We could see how the systems responded and how drivers react to the information.

After the driving session, we had the opportunity to get behind the speed measurement devices. K40 brought both radar and laser measurement devices so we could experience what police officers go through while using their equipment on a vehicle equipped with a K40. Not only did we get to see how the K40 laser defusers work, but we also gained an excellent understanding of reasonable laser range limitations and expectations. This training helps us provide a better explanation to our clients about how to react to alerts.
