The Handcrafted Car Audio staff are always researching the latest and greatest vehicle lighting technologies. In the past few years, the availability, performance and cost of LED lighting have improved to the point that this is now a popular option for use on cars, trucks and motorcycles. Let’s look at why motorcycle lighting LEDs are one of our most recommended lighting upgrade solutions for motorcycles.
Efficiency
With LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), electrons pass through a luminescing material and produce light. That sounds very simple, and it is. What makes LED lights so efficient? Unlike incandescent lights, they do not rely on the glow of a hot filament to produce light. Not needing to heat anything means they require much less current to produce the same amount of light output. This reduction in current eases the load on your motorcycle’s electrical system.
Reliability
LED lights are solid-state semiconductors – everything is secured directly to a circuit board. There is also no need for glass in a LED bulb. Incandescent and HID bulbs still require a great deal of labor to produce, and their parts are more fragile and less resistant to shock and vibration. LED lights last for more than 30,000 hours. A standard incandescent bulb may fail after 2,000 hours. That different is huge! Even if LED lights cost 10 times as much, they would be a great deal.
Color
LED lights produce a very bright, white light while the light from incandescent bulbs typically contains a lot of yellow light, so they don’t look as good.
Don’t confuse the color of the light produced by a bulb with how bright it is. The Kelvin scale measures light color. A “cool” light has a color temp of 5,000–6,000 K, and a “warm” light is in the 3,000–4,000 K range. We use a measurement value called lumens to quantify how bright light is. More lumens means more light will be on the road in front of you. When used in tail lights and turn signals, the brighter LED lights make you more visible.
Easily Upgraded
We have replacement LED solutions that are designed specifically to work with your factory light housings and wiring. Installation is quick and simple. We also have turn signal “switchback” solutions. A switchback is a multi-element replacement light that includes both amber and white lighting. When you are driving, the lights look like white running lights. When you activate the turn signals, the white LEDs turn off and amber LEDs turn on. The effect is very cool and looks amazing.
