A client from Gilbert, Arizona, contacted Handcrafted Car Audio about upgrading his 2012 Maserati Gran Turismo MC stereo system. We met with the client to look over the vehicle and get an understanding of his goals for the audio system upgrade. He listened to a few different products in the showroom, and we explained what we had in mind for the installation. With his approval, we scheduled an appointment to start work.
Custom Radio Installation
The client wanted a full-on interface for his smartphone, as well as satellite radio and a backup camera. The Pioneer AVIC-7200NEX, which includes both CarPlay and Android Auto was a perfect choice. There is no radio replacement option for the Maserati, so we made one from scratch. We gave the new replacement panel curves to match the dash shape and added a Maserati emblem to the top center.
An ASWC interface allowed us to make the audio control buttons on the factory steering wheel work with the Pioneer radio. We installed a Mito 20-VN3218 camera on the rear of the vehicle to make parking easier. Finally, we added a SiriusXM SXV300 tuner to provide the client with satellite radio.
The only way to keep the factory clock on the dash working was to keep the factory radio in the car. We extended the factory wiring and mounted the radio in the rear of the vehicle.
Amplifier Configuration
After removing the factory Bose amplifier, we installed an Audison AP8.9bit to power the interior speakers of this Maserati stereo system. For a little extra kick, we added an Audison AP1D to power a custom subwoofer enclosure. We ran quality interconnects from the Pioneer radio to the amplifiers. ABS adapter plates allowed us to mount the new amplifiers in place of the factory amp.
We configured the eight-channel amp with channels 1 and 2 bridged to power the driver’s door midbass speakers, channels 3 and 4 to power the passenger door midbass, channels 5 and 6 to rear quarter panel speakers, and finally channels 7 and 8 to power the front tweeters.
Fiberglass Subwoofer Enclosure
We created a fiberglass subwoofer enclosure in the right corner of the trunk. The front of the enclosure is almost flush with the side panel trim, and we recessed an Audiofrog GS10D4 subwoofer into the face for a custom look. The AP1D provides 540 watts of power to the subwoofer.
We used Soundskins Pro sound deadening to seal up the opening in the rear deck after we removed the Bose subwoofer.
