Mercedes-Benz GLE63 S Custom Radar System For Scottsdale Client

A client from Scottsdale, AZ, brought his 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE63 S to Handcrafted Car Audio in search of a custom radar detector system. The GLE63 S features a V8 engine that produces 577 horsepower. A few seconds too long on the gas pedal, and the speed limit would be history. We talked to the client about where he drives to determine what kind of speed detection systems he would encounter. After an inspection of the truck, we created a quote for the client that would offer as much protection as possible. He accepted and we booked an appointment to do the work.

K40 Radar Detection

The front bumper cover and trim pieces were removed for the highest-quality installation.

The radar module was securely mounted to the bumper support beam for a solid installation.

We based the system on the amazing K40 RL360i system. The RL360i includes a pair of radar detector modules, a main control center and a GPS antenna. We mounted the radar detection modules behind the front and rear bumpers. We made custom plastic mounting brackets for each sensor and secured them with stainless steel hardware.

The client chose the K40 Expert Controller option. This little control panel allows the client to set locations where false alarms commonly occur, quickly and easily.

Laser Diffuser Installation

The front laser defusers are hidden behind the grille for a stealth installation.

We installed a total of five K40 laser diffusers. We mounted two diffusers in the front grille above the silver garnish and another pair in the lower grille. We installed a fifth sensor in the rear of the vehicle. We used plastic brackets and stainless hardware to mount all of the diffusers to ensure they would be completely reliable. We made sure to angle each sensor perfectly for maximum signal detection and transmission.

We ran the wiring from all of the components alongside factory wiring harnesses. We secured and concealed the wiring with Tesa exterior tape. The wiring is effectively invisible once wrapped in this protective cloth tape.

Custom LED Mounting

The cluster was removed from the car and two small holes were added to give us a mounting location for the LED’s.

The turn indicators now not only indicate turning, but also radar alerts.

The K40 system includes a pair of blue LEDs to provide the driver with a visual warning of the presence of radar. For this client, we removed the instrument cluster and mounted the LEDs so that they would shine into the turn signal indicators. This location puts them in plain sight of the driver, but without looking like we just drilled a few holes in his dash. You know us – we have more class than that! One LED illuminates to warn of a detection in front of the vehicle, while the other serves to warn of detection from the rear.
