Mesa Harley-Davidson Client Gets Upgraded Road Glide Audio System

Sometimes the simplest of advertising endeavors can produce the best results. For example, this client had been traveling between Illinois and Arizona when he saw our sandwich board that reads “Motorcycle audio experts.” He had just brought out his 2015 Harley-Davidson Road Glide and our simple sign prompted him to drop into our shop to inquire about upgrading the audio system.

We chatted for a few minutes and mentioned that our demo bike was a 2016 Road Glide. We headed for the install bay to check out Jon’s bike. We explained how and why we use the combination of the Audison Prima amp with Audiofrog speakers. He hopped on for a listen. After less than a minute, he turned the music down and asked “OK – how much, and when can you do it?” We booked an appointment to work on his bike right then and there.

Premium Speaker Upgrade

First step, Disassembly!

Great care is taken when disassembling the bike to run the wires and install the gear.

The new Audiofrog midrange speaker fits the space perfectly.

We started by removing the factory speakers and installing a set of Audiofrog GS60 midrange speakers in their place. We wired the midrange drivers up to two pairs of channels of an Audison Prima AP8.9bit amplifier. We sourced a set of Hogtunes metal mesh replacement grilles with the chrome trim option to match the bike. We cut holes out of the inside upper corners of the grilles to mount a set of Audiofrog GS10 tweeters. Then we powered each tweeter with a pair of amplifier channels.

Big Power, Small Package

It’s hard to believe so much power and processing is contained in this little package.

A mounting bracket was fabricated to mount the amplifier in the fairing.

We used an Audison AP8.9bit amplifier for the system, wiring up this eight-channel amp as a four-channel, with each pair of output channels bridged to provide 130 watts of power to each of the four speakers. The onboard DSP processor allowed us to set the crossover points for the speakers and retune the system to compensate for the strange factory tuning. We mounted the amplifier inside the front fairing and protected all the new wiring with Tesa cloth tape.

Once the system was together and tuned, it was time to have the customer come back to us at Handcrafted Car Audio in Chandler, Arizona, to pick up his bike. He was excited to finally be able to enjoy his music the way he wanted – loud and clear. He had a listen to the bike when he arrived and was thrilled with the performance of the new system. Our completely active (no passive crossover) design dramatically improves the efficiency of the system – even at high listening levels, it remains clear, detailed and controlled.
