A client from Chandler recently visited Handcrafted Auto Marine and Offroad to discuss the installation of a custom radar detector and laser jamming system on his 2017 Chevy SS. The client wanted a system that would be properly integrated into the vehicle while providing the best protection possible against police speed traps. We put together a system that includes the Radenso RC-M radar detector and AL Priority laser defense system.
Custom-Installed Radar Detector
The project started with the removal of the front and rear bumper covers to provide us with access for the installation of the radar-receiving antennae. The RC-M Ultimate Edition we installed uses dedicated front and rear receivers to ensure optimal sensitivity in both directions. Because high-frequency radar signals pass through plastics without no significant loss in signal strength, the radar antennae are concealed from view behind the bumper covers.
Chevy SS Laser Jamming System
As more and more law enforcement agencies switch to laser guns, our speeding ticket defense systems have evolved to include laser jamming systems. The AL Priority system we designed includes two laser transceivers and a high-power transmission unit on the front of the vehicle, with another pair of transceivers on the rear. Our plan to ensure that the system was optimized for appearance as well as performance involved creating five unique mounting solutions. For the front, the primary laser sensors are mounted at the outer edges of the air inlet in the bumper. Our fabrication team removed a blank area of the grille and created a pair of IR plastic filler panels for a clean and tidy appearance. This plastic looks opaque to the naked eye but is completely transparent to the infrared signals used by police laser guns and our jamming system.
We created a third IR plastic filler panel in the shape of the Chevrolet emblem in the center of the grille. We mounted the TX module in the middle of the emblem, then affixed a new IR plastic cover we had made over top. It’s nearly impossible to tell where the units are mounted if you don’t already know the vehicle well.
For the rear sensors, we created two mounting pods that fit into the corners of the license plate cutout in the rear bumper cover. Once again, we used a combination of acrylic and IR plastic to create a mounting solution that was cosmetically integrated into the vehicle.
The control panel for the system is mounted in the overhead console for easy access.
The Importance of Expert Laser Defense System Installation
While the features and quality of the hardware the client chose are crucial to avoiding speeding tickets, so too are the methods we used to integrate those products into the vehicle. In particular, the position of the sensors relative to one another and the ground has to be mapped carefully. Likewise, we have to be precise in ensuring that each sensor is aimed perfectly parallel to the ground and in line with the centerline of the vehicle. If we don’t heed these and several other criteria, the system may not perform as intended and could leave the client vulnerable.
We also take a great deal of care in how we mount the control modules and run the wiring through the vehicle. As you can see, the modules are secured safely above the footwell, and we label all the sensor connections near the bumpers so that they can be disconnected easily should the car ever need to be serviced.
Phoenix’s Radar Detector and Laser Jamming Experts
After several days of work, we had this laser jamming and radar detector system integrated into the Chevy SS. We wrap up every project of this scale with thorough testing using a radar gun and DragonEye lidar gun to ensure that everything is perfect. The client returned to Handcrafted Auto Marine and Offroad to pick up the vehicle. We explained how the systems worked and how he should respond to different warnings. We also explained Radenso’s five-year ticket-free guarantee. He was ecstatic with the installation.
